Resolution Solutions 2016

The Holidays are over and, if you're anything like me, you are pooped.   Typically, after an overindulgent holiday season, we make New Year's Resolutions to get healthier, lose weight, get back in shape and start treating our bodies better.  With the stress of the season, excess eating and drinking, lack of sleeping (who has time to sleep?) and holiday travel, our bodies and our skin (remember that it's the largest organ of our body) definitely need some renewal.

The negative effects of winter (we know it's coming), less than stellar diet and some end-of-year chaos takes it's toll and shows all over our face.  There is a solution to lackluster complexion, dehydrated, tired, droopy skin and baggy, tired eyes. Our Oxygen Illuminating Facial is just what you need.  January Skincare Special provides The Oxygen Illuminating Facial every two weeks in January and February for only $350.   This is on our menu for $110 EACH.

For the entire body's restoration, we are giving you The Garden Mint Algae Body Masque and Massage.  We will begin with a full bod, dry brush, then brush on a highly potent herbal masque filled with rich emollients, minerals, and vitamins to restore moisture and add a glow. Ivy, pellitory, cucumber, elder, and arnica extracts are combined with garden mint essential oil and are infused into a glycerin, kelp, and marine algae. The algae body masques are formulated to stimulate circulation and cell regeneration. You will be wrapped in this aromamatic, warm blend, masque removed with warm towels, and then receive an amazing relaxing swedish massage.  This service will only be available while supply lasts.  Complete and thorough restoration for only $99.

New Year Resolution for nail care is in the bag with this package of 3 luxury mani/pedi services for only $60 each. NO Acrylic.  NO Get.  Just honest, clean and healthy treatment with the BEST Products available.   They say it takes 3 times to make something a habit.  Healthy, beautiful nails begin with the habit of taking care of your feet, hands and nails.  We have heard people say that Spa 131 is habit forming!

2016 brings a few other awesome things.  We are opening up the Spa for late hours in Thursday and Friday evenings for our VIP Working Professionals.
We will be offering 90 minute services at 6pm and 7:30.  Now there is no excuse for you anymore.  You've asked and we are delivering.

We have also had requests for Student Packages.  Several students have visited us during exam times.  As stressful as that is for them, they said visits to us for massages makes a ton of difference.  I even had a mom call and ask if she could purchase a package. I was sorry to tell her that we didn't have that on our menu . . .So . . . introducing our Student Massage Package - good for a semester of relaxation.  Please call if you have a student here at USC or at one of Columbia's other fine schools.  Our regular massage packages are still available to you, as well.  Regular Monthly Massage really can make a difference to you and to your students.

Did you know that a whopping 45% of us actually make New Year's Resolutions?  Do you? Interestingly, I just read a Forbes article that said only 24% keep them.  Here's a link to that article that will provide your 6 Ways to Keep Your 2016 Resolutions. http://www.forbes.com/sites/nancyanderson/2015/12/26/six-ways-to-make-your-new-years-resolutions-stick-in-2016/  I hope you'll read it and let me know how it goes for you in the coming months.   Don't be a RESOLUTION DUMPER.

I want to share with you interesting news about Tumeric - the herb I'm absolutely crazy about. Forgive me for "linking" you up in this newsletter/blog, but this is just too good not to share.

When you have a little extra time, come back to this and click here and read this awesome article.  You can find tons of information on this great little herb, but this is a really good read:  http://www.stopagingnow.com/cmax766/utm_source=google&utm_medium=ppc&utm_term=generic_tc&utm_content=curcumin2k&utm_campaign=article&gclid=CNHH84ix-skCFYIaHwodU7UCnA

That's all we have for this issue.  I just want to say that I hope 2016 is the absolute best and most amazing year for you, for your family, for your prosperity, health and happiness.  I am claiming that for me and mine.  This past year has been a challenge for me personally and professionally, but we got through it fairly unscaithed and all in one piece.  When you come to visit us this month, share your 2016 goals with me.  You need an accountability partner anyway, right?  I will encourage you, along with your great spa treat and provide encouragement,  a smile and hug which is all absolutely 100%  FREE.

Cheers!

It's always merry and bright inside Spa 131 and this year, every one is on Santa's good list. Be on the look out for your Christmas postcard from us in the next few days.  It holds a total of $50 toward services -- $25 for December and then another $25 for your January spa treat.  If you don't get yours, just give us a call and we'll hold one for you.  We would hate for anyone to miss out on our Christmas gift to our friends and family.

We always have our coveted gift certificates available, but now through
December 10th, purchase a gift certificate for $150 - good for any Spa 131
service of an hour or longer - and receive a bonus $50 gift certificate to use for
yourself OR give as another christmas present. Now that's a good deal, my friends.  Remind people why you are everyone's favorite!

Exciting new inside Spa 131 - What's the latest gadget we've brought onboard? If you have spots on your face, you're gonna want to listen up.  We now have CryoClear.

REPAIR. RENEW. REJOICE.

CryoClear is a cutting edge way to treat age spots, sun spots and skin tags.
You'll be amazed at the reduction in treatment time and drastically improved results.  CryoClear® freezes at – 79° C to a depth that does not penetrate the epidermal layer, delivering a very safe and clinically effective treatment. CryoClear’s high efficacy – over 95% – combined with less destruction of healthy tissue makes it perfect for treating age spots, sun spots and skin tags.
Whether used as a stand-alone treatment, or in addition to a chemical peel or microdermabrasion treatment to treat stubborn dark spots on the hands, face and neck, CryoClear offers a better, faster cryotherapy solution with significant benefits.
On Friday, December 11, Spa 131 is bringing our first FREEZE IT FRIDAY.  Here are the dets:   From 10-1, the Rep for CyroClear, Liz Munn, will be with us offering a super duper Spa 131 ONLY special.   Regular price for a CryoClear session is $75 for the first treated spot, then $50 for every other spot.  On FREEZE IT FRIDAY, Liz is paying the first $5 for every spot she treats.  Even MORE exciting is that the first 3 participants will get their first spot treated for FREE.  You'll need to call to get on the list - remember that the first 3 responders get their first spot treated with no charge.
Christmas Season brings with it so many opportunities to party and celebrate. This is surely not the time we want to have to deal with under eye circles and faulty, cakey makeup.  Let Miss Kandace get you ready for your close up with your makeup.   I truly believe that she is one the the best makeup artists in Columbia.  I came across this Huffington Post article on the subject and hope you'll enjoy it.  Click on this link and read when you have a minute or two:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/the-truth-about-dark-circles_564cc92ae4b031745cef3f7c   In the mean time, save your used tea bags.  The old tried and true remedy of used cold tea bags is good for a quick refresher.  Keep them in a closed tight ziplock in your freezer.  Pop two out, plop on your tired peepers and just lie down and take 10.  You'll feel much better and your baby blues will thank you.
That's all for this edition.  Each of us here want to wish each of YOU a very blessed and joyous Holiday Season.
On behalf of the Spa 131 team - Amy Belle Isle, Derek Brasington, Kandace Wilson, Kayla Harris and Yolanda Carson - this is Marci Delaney saying, "Merry Christmas"
We hope to see you soon!

Season of Thanks

Happy November, my friends.  The Season of Thanksgiving is upon us and I am indeed thankful for so much.  Here's just a partial list:  My family.  I love them so very much and am blessed beyond measure because of them.  And here's news  - - - I'm going to get that Grandbaby I've wanted . . . and here's the BEST part . . . It's a GIRL!   For those of you that know my family, know that I'm the only girl from WAAAY back.  I have brothers and we all have only had boys.  Now those boys are having babies and they are all boys, so you can see how thrilled and thankful this girlie-girl is and can't hardly wait to meet the new Delaney Princess.

I'm so very thankful to have a business that I love, with clients that I love and with a team of talented professionals that I love.  Wow . . the work trifecta.

I am thankful for chosen family - my dear, dear friends.  I am thankful for business associates that I have a blessed relationship with.  I have food to eat, clothes to wear, and a comfortable, warm bed to sleep in.   Everything else is such a bonus,

We at Spa 131 every day feel blessed and honored to have you as a part of our lives and pledge to continue to give you 100% every time.  There are changes afoot in the Spa - some exciting and good, some disappointing and sad.

1st - We are thrilled to offer Massage Cupping Bodywork Therapy by Licensed Massage Therapist, Yolanda Carson.  Cupping achieves powerful results in:  *  Cellulite Reduction  *  Pain Reduction * Joint Mobilization  *  Lymph Drainage  *  Scar Reduction  *  Skin Toning and Firming  *  Detoxication  *  Releasing Tight, Contracted Muscle Tissue,  *  Assisting with Weight Loss Programs  *  Pre and Post Operative Therapy to shorten Recovery Time *  Athletic Performance Enhancement.  If you have "Issues in your Tissues"  You REALLY should give this Massage Cupping Bodywork Therapy a try.

In addition to Yolanda, Derek, and Amy, we are looking to add to our team of SC Licensed Massage Therapists.  If you know an excellent therapist that would make a good full-time addition to our team, please send them our way.  I would really be thankful for that.

Exciting November Specials are something to make you feel thankful.  Let's start with some awesome facials.

Choose from:
  Apple Pie Facial
  Blueberry Enzyme Facial
Pumpkin Exfoliating Facial

All of these Fall Delights are designed to get your skin glowing, and in November you can take advantage of a very special $69 price for one of these fall-themed facial treats.

Our Massage Therapist are offering you a little something awesome this month.  Lookie!  Buy any hour massage or longer and get your December massage at 1/2 price.

Our sad news is that our nail provider, Amy, is no longer a part of our team, however, that is good news for you.  Ms. Kandace is stepping up to the plate and will be providing nail services for you.   While Kandace is dually licensed with both Cosmetology and Esthetics, her focus has been on skin care so she has been out of practice with nail services. That means ALL nail services will be 1/2 off all November so that she can sharpen her skills- - - now that's great news for our guests.  Please take advantage of this offer.  It would be of benefit for you AND benefit for us.

By Rachel Pomerance Berl for U.S. News
It's T minus just days, where T equals the most anticipated home-cooked meal in the country's collective consciousness. But that doesn't mean you have that long to morph into Martha Stewart and host a holiday party that would put a pilgrim to shame. Do everyone a favor and dial down the pressure on the whole shebang.
You've heard the expression, "If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy." Well, the same might be said of a hostess and her party. If you're feeling stressed and flustered, that's the vibe you give your gathering. And let's face it, there's enough drama around the holidays without party performance anxiety. With that in mind, here are five tips to keep you and your guests feeling -- what's that? -- thankful for this occasion.
1. Prepare as much as you can ahead of time.
"Thanksgiving dinner is a meal that is very well suited to making ahead," says Faith Durand, executive editor of the home cooking website The Kitchn, which published aseries of guides for Thanksgiving. The roasted and baked foods at the heart of the meal often taste better when they're heated up a day after cooking them, she says. "I talk about aggressively minimizing your work on Thanksgiving day because you want to enjoy people," she says. "You don't want to be sweating and running around stressed."
Durand makes as much as possible ahead of time, even the gravy, which she fixes the night before with stock from roasted turkey wings she'll cook for dinner. Cranberry sauce, for example, can be made ahead and stay fresh for a long time in the fridge, Durand says. She also suggests warming up your mashed potatoes in a slow cooker for four to five hours. "You won't suffer any loss in quality."
In addition to making sure you have all the ingredients for your menu, remember to also consider the dishes and equipment you'll need such as a roasting pan or a masher.
2. Know your limits -- and don't be afraid to ask for help.
"Don't take on too much on your own unless you really feel like you can prepare things in advance," says Lizzie Post, co-author of the 18th edition of "Emily Post's Etiquette" and great-great-granddaugher of the guru of graciousness. At her mother's Thanksgiving dinner, every member of the family is charged with bringing a dish and handling a chore, leaving her mother in charge of the turkey and two stuffings. "We do it as a way of thanking my mother and helping her and making it easier on her," she says.
Along the same line, Post says Thanksgiving dinner is not the time for hosts to try out new dishes or equipment. "At some point, everyone has their first turkey, and everyone has to try it, but have a Chinese take-out menu on backup," she says.
3. Set the tone to suit your style.
Durand loves to assemble a beautiful table. To make it feel welcoming, she drapes the table in a bright runner instead of a white tablecloth; the former is cheaper and easier to launder, and the latter can make guests tense up over anticipated spills.
To keep a festive mood flowing, she suggests serving a dry cider, a "very classic American drink" that's usually low in alcohol and less expensive than wine. After dinner, you can offer a hot after-dinner drink, which "feels very swanky and very kind of high entertaining," but is actually fairly easy, Durand says Consider a simple mulled cider or wine, a spiced chai or spiked cranberry punch, and leave your concoction on the stove throughout the meal. "Warm it up and then serve it in little cups," she says, "and then everyone has a reason to linger around the table with you."
Post advises that you can always close the bar if someone has had too much to drink, and make sure your guests don't drink and drive. You can also opt to collect car keys from your guests upon arrival and avoid a potentially awkward -- or tragic -- situation later.
4. Honor your guests.
The dinner itself is a gift to your guests, but you can make them feel welcome and treated through a variety of thoughtful touches. Take, for example, seating arrangements, which can be a useful tool for separating those who don't mix well and connecting those who do.
You know those guests who always end up in a heated political debate? Don't seat them together, Post says, noting the age-old etiquette standard to steer clear of subjects such as sex, money, politics and religion. These topics can make people uncomfortable. Also, separate couples, she says, to encourage and diversify conversation among all your guests. And nix the kids' tables. Integrate children with the adults, but just be sure they are near an adult they feel comfortable with in case they need help.
Also, while it's great to engage your guests in a group tradition like going around the table and saying what you're thankful for, don't force anyone into making a public statement, Post says, adding that the shy guest will be hoping for an invitation to someone else's Thanksgiving dinner next year.
5. Remember, it's a learning opportunity.
"Step away from it, and stop thinking of it as Thanksgiving with a capital T," says Durand, who considers the meal "a homey weeknight dinner, just amped up." You could also think of it as a crash course in learning how to cook by planning and preparing meals. As she says, "You're kind of like running a marathon, and it trains you to run every day as a cook."

That's all for this month.  I want to leave you with a November challenge that I think will provide peace, happiness and begin an attitude of gratitude in your life.  It's so simple.  Every single night before your go to sleep, think back over your day and find JUST ONE THING to be grateful for - One Thing!  No matter who you are and no matter what you are going through, you can always find at least one thing.  Every morning, before your feet hit the floor, say a prayer of thanks.  Thanks for rest.  Thanks for the opportunity of a brand new day and opportunities ahead.  I know it sounds simplistic and it is . . . but it is life changing.  I would love to hear from you if you do accept my challenge - - - I really would love to.

Blessings to you all, my friends, our friends from Spa 131.  On behalf of our team, we want to wish you a very blessed Thanksgiving Season.

Pumpkins! Pumpkins every where . . . . even here at Spa 131.

It's that time of the year for pumpkin this, and pumpkin that.  Even if you're not a gigantic fan of pumpkin spice like I am, you can't avoid it.  Every year we search to find that special pumpkin concoction to offer you at Spa 131.

Our first is the Pumpkin Pedi  $59 - an  hour of feet pampering delight - includes scrub up to your knees, with massage, exfoliating, cutting, shaping and painting (or not.)  So, so, so sweet!

2nd is Sea Salt and Pumpkin Exfoliating Massage.  This hour service is a relaxing Swedish Massage with the exfoliating properties of  pumpkin and salt.  Your body will be kneaded till all the tension is gently rubbed away, along with summer dry skin.  Then, hot towels will conclude the treatment in the most delightful way.  All this for $59.

Finally - how about a delicious pumpkin facial?   Truly my very favorite facial treat.  Pumpkin is high in antioxidants and jam-packed with vitamins A, C and E, potassium, beta-carotene and zinc, which are all amazing anti-aging ingredients.  That's why pumpkin can give your all-over skin a healthy and rejuvenated glow!  Book this October Pumpkin Facial for just $59.

October also brings about two promotions for Social Awareness.

This campaign is always over-shadowed by the October Breast Cancer Campaign, but is so very important.  Unfortunately, this is one area that South Carolina knows a lot about, in that we are #1 in the Nation for violence against woman.  Spa 131 would like to be able to reach out a treat some ladies living in shelters because of domestic violence.  Would you like to sponsor someone?   Every $20 you donate can bring one lady into to Spa 131 during the last week of October.  Please think about it - together we can put some big smiles on some deserving ladies.

October 8 from 5-7 is our annual PAINT IT PINK PARTY.  There will be prize drawings.  $15 mini-massages, FREE pink polish on fingers OR toes.  Food - Beverage - Fun.  It would be nice if you would drop by,  We would love to have you.  We just might have some honored guests joining us.

Finally, we are delighted to tell you about a new addition to our team.  Ms. Yolanda Carson has relocated from Atlanta and now building a massage business with us.  She is a single Mom of two adorable little ones and would sure appreciate you giving her a try.  Yolanda is a SC Licensed Massage Therapist and a Certified Massage Cupping Therapist.  You don't have to be a Hollywood A-lister to try cupping massage.  We now have it right here at Spa 131.  What is cupping massage? Here's a link to learn about it:  http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-16791/3-reasons-everyone-should-try-cupping.html  (btw, you don't always have a mark afterward - I didn't!)

This isn't much of a newsletter, but short and sweet on our Spa-tober Specials.  We hope to have you in real soon.

Come and indulge yourself on all of our be-witching potions, lotions and other notions.

Cheers!

Farewell to Summer - - - -- - - - - - - - - - - *kicking and screaming all the way

September is here - whether we want it or not - waiting to be embraced as it symbolizes the return to everything scheduled - school, kids programs, NCIS (9-22 for those of you waiting for the return of  Jethro Gibb) and, of course, FOOTBALL!  In a fond farewell to summer, Spa 131 is putting together several Chic Packages to help you switch gears.

First up is our $99 mini facial Refresher Package. With this sweet deal you'll receive a 25-minute refresher facial, 25- minute head, neck and shoulder massage AND an express manicure.

Next in line is our $99 Summer Clean up Package, which includes a 25-minute exfoliating facial to whisk away tired, dried summer skin, a 25-minute full body exfoliating scrub AND your awesome Endless Summer Spray tan.

Take note of this, my friends. All 90 minute massages are only $99 in September - that is hot stones, deep therapeutic, relaxing Swedish - the choice is yours to make.  90-minutes of pure massage bliss is on sale this month only!  This is the absolute BEST time to MAKE time to reward yourself for your own awesomeness.  Go ahead!  DO IT!

In order to keep that summer glow, Spa 131's awesome Spray Tan is just $25 throughout September. Remember to prepare well before your appointment by shaving the night before, but the day of come freshly showered and generously exfoliated - especially all places typically dryer like your knees and elbows.   Stay away from moisturizing shower gels and refrain from using ANY body lotion, perfume and deodorant.  You'll receive post-care tips when you're finished getting your amazing just-off-the-beach color spray.

What good is an Endless Summer Tan without Endless Summer toes?  Our final Package features our scents of summer (Mojito or Margarita) mani and pedi, PLUS full body scrub AND Spray tan.  Yep, this Endless Summer Package is only $99 in September.

Those of you that know me, know what a fan I am of the Grove Park Inn in Asheville.  Close enough to drive for a delicious weekend of awesomeness, and with a Luxury feel so close to home.  My sweet husband swept me away this last weekend of summer, as did all gazillion people staying at my get-away place . . . it was packed.  What that means is that there was no room at the spa for me . . . *daggers to the heart!  Not to be deterred, I booked spa services at a local place recommended by the lovely GPI concierge.  Now here's my story:

First clue that it wasn't going to be great was that the cab driver had never heard of it - but when I googled, it read that it was voted Asheville's BEST DAY SPA (sadly, this experience has lessened my opinion of the "Best Of" competitions).  We pulled up in front of a truly dilapidated house with crumbling stairs.   The cab driver told me not to worry about that too much as it was in a very historic area of homes.

When I got to the top of the steep, crumbling staircase, I was met not with a front door but a closed in deck with a small sign pointing me around to the side of the house for the entrance.  Opening that door took me into a tiny entrance hall with steps leading to an upstairs or a small door to the left.  Hmmm . . . no welcoming sign or anything marked "entrance."  I took my chances with the door and only hoped I wasn't actually walking into someone's living room . . . or worse.

It was a hair salon.  An extremely cluttered and packed tight hair salon.  It should have been comforting to see a giant A rating sign by the NC Cosmetology Inspectors, but with all the "stuff" everywhere it failed.  I was greeted by a smiling hairstylist, who told me to take a seat, brought me bottled water and a clipboard with intake forms.  I did feel slightly better in that they wanted information to better serve me, but neither therapist had the forms in hand when I saw them. I am fairly certain they never even looked at them at all  *face palm!

In all fairness, the facial and massage was very good.  The problem was my mind kept saying over and over, "I hope this is clean.  I hope this is clean."  So . . . I always try to learn something new when ever I get to have professional services somewhere other than Spa 131.   What I learned is vital: You really never get a second chance to make a first impression!  Appearances mean so much.   These two therapists might have been absolutely awesome, but because the place looked like a wrecking ball would be doing them a favor AND the clutter, junk, and jumbled appearance gave an unclean impression AND lack of welcoming entrance  - all caused me to form an unfavorable opinion immediately.  Unfortunately, that opinion can't be changed.

This experience makes me committed to working harder at making sure that Spa 131 is always clean, uncluttered and completely welcoming to every guest.  Please let me know if you ever find your experience lacking.  I can't fix what I don't know is in need of repair.  I would really appreciate your feedback and will work hard to meet your expectations every time.

Spread "it"

I know - that's a really unusual title. Spread it? What? Spread what?

Well, friends, I have made a personal commitment to be a JOY SPREADER. Some might want to accuse me of being a Pollyanna (look it up, Young'ens), and maybe I am. But, you know what? Spreading goodness isn't a new idea - just look to the Golden Rule - "Treat others like you want others to treat you." I have found it very time consuming to keep my Face Book page a positive place, but I'm working hard to delete negative posts as I see them. Whew . . . full time job with that.

There is so much ugliness in the world and we invite it into our homes and into our head every day - with television, movies, news broadcasts, radio, Face Book, - the list is never ending. Some time ago I stopped my constant "news" watching and don't regret that at all. I still know what's going on, but I just don't have it pounded into my brain on a continual basis. I have all but quit watching TV and haven't missed a single thing. I began to find it so sensational on every show. Do we really need to see all the blood and gore, on-screen sex and promiscuity? I choose NOT to invite that in my home during primetime, or anytime - I just think it is not necessary to tell a story.

So, off the soapbox. I'm about spreading happiness. Perhaps that is one reason why I am so in love with my J-O-B. Owning and working in a spa is all about giving and sharing. Spa Professionals are innately "givers." To provide the services that we do, if we are really committed, we give so much of ourselves in every treatment. We have a mutual "exchange" of energy with our clients. I give to you and you (Mr or Ms Spa Guest) give to me - we spread comfort and peace to one another.

With August already here, Spa 131 is still spreading happiness with our FREE TRAVEL VOUCHER Give-Away. Every Saturday we have a drawing from the names of every single guest in the Spa receiving a hour (or more) service during that week. So far we have given a voucher to April Treadwell, Nancy Evans, Debbi Estes, and Amber Schneider. We can't wait to hear about their trips and see the pix. If you want in on this fun and very happy promotion, come see us in August. I don't think we'll be able to extend this into the next month.

Unwind during August with a refreshing Mint Iced Tea Facial - our August Special Facial. Your summer skin will be cleansed, exfoliated, and nourished with a fresh medley of Raspberry, Peaches, Strawberries, Green Tea and Mint. The environmental stresses of summer will be melted away as this antioxidant rich facial restores your skin's softness and vibrancy. Special price is just $75. You are invited to spread an invitation to your friends to enjoy this summer time treat, while supplies last.

I want to spread the reach of our newsletter/blog with sharing a local business with you - something that we will continue to do every month. Our first recommendation is where to look for financial planning. We recommend Michael Oana Retirement Planning Specialist/Personal Financial Advisor 4408 Forest Drive – Suite 2001 Columbia, SC 29206 P: 803-798989 michaeloana@michaeloana.com. Michael and his wife Heather are lovely people and have been a wonderful supporter of what we have to offer at Spa 131. Consider Michael for your future financial needs.

Please spread the news about Spa 131 and what all deliciousness we have to offer. Amy Lock is still offering her summer time Margarita and Mojito Pedicures and our Island Colors by Zoya and Vinylux are sure to make your tootsies and digits happy. Derek and Amy Belle are still offering their Massage Sampler Package (3 months of hour massages) for $165. Our Norvell Airbrush Spray tans provide gorgeous just-off-the-beach color at $30 each or 4 for $100. We really, really, really appreciate your helping to spread the word.

Now here let's talk about what NOT to spread: Hyperpigmentation or Brown Spots.

Pigment spots are the result of repeated and unprotected sun exposure, but they can also be caused by a genetic predisposition, hormonal imbalance, pregnancy or by taking birth-control pills. The skin can also become pigmented due to inflammation after sustaining an injury or after prolonged exposure to UV rays.

It is possible to prevent the appearance of brown, pigmented spots by following a few simple rules - the MOST IMPORTANT rule is liberal and frequent use of broad-spectrum sunscreen. In addition, since some perfumes containing alcohol can be photosensitizing, limit their use during sun exposure. I would bet most of you are not aware of this little bit of info.

In the case that the pigment spots are already present, several options are available to you. For example, 5 to 10 microdermabrasion sessions can be an effective way to reduce the appearance of pigment spots. During a microdermabrasion treatment, your Licensed Esthetician performs a deep exfoliation that evens the skin tone. Pigment spots can also be lightened with Chemical peels. Peels can range from mild AHA to deeper Jessner Peel and TCA peels. Sometimes a combination of both Microderm AND peels are recommended. Lasers are also very effective.  We love giving exciting first week offers, so for the first week of August - the  Tuesday the 4th through Saturday, August 8 we are happy to offer a 2 for 1 Microdermabrasion.  That means one in August and your 2nd in September (no extension!!!!)  Go online to schedule and write Aug 2-4-1 in the memo/notes section.  Again, we ask that you share this news with your friends.

So that's it for this month.  I ask that if you see me, can we share a smile?  This heat is ridiculous and we are seemingly a wee bit testy because of it . . . but maybe that's all the more reason for spreading some joy with one another.  Remember, you never know what the other person has on their plate and your smile may be the only one they see.

Cheers!

You put de lime in de coconut - - - -

No need to call the Doctor and wake em up! It's Spa 131 to your summer rescue! We have lime, coconut, cherry pie and all sorts of summer deliciousness awaiting for you!

Before I tell you about our special offerings for July, I want to speak briefly about the grueling heat and South Carolina sunshine. I know! I know! Not another sunscreen sermon . . . but friends . . . I have another basal cell carcinoma. You all know that I do preach sunscreen at every opportunity. When we provide gorgeous airbrush tanning, I always say that it's only cosmetic - use plenty of broad-spectrum sunscreen (which protects against both UVA and UVB rays) and use often. All of our skin care guests get a generous coat after every facial.  Also, after a delightful manicure sunscreen is generously applied to the backs of your hands in our Nail Sanctuary. Still . . . it's happening again - another skin cancer on ME - the sunscreen QUEEN! So, maybe it might be time to learn a little bit more about the most common form skin cancer - basal cell - because sometime it doesn't even really look like much and it is, in fact, a skin cancer.
Basal cell carcinoma occurs when one of the skin's basal cells develops a mutation in its DNA. Basal cells are found at the bottom of the epidermis — the outermost layer of skim - - - so at the "bottom" of the "top" - - - get that? Much of the damage to DNA in basal cells is thought to result from ultraviolet (UV) radiation found in sunlight and in commercial tanning lamps and tanning beds. But sun exposure doesn't explain skin cancers that develop on skin not ordinarily exposed to sunlight. This indicates that other factors may contribute to your risk of skin cancer, such as being exposed to toxic substances or having a condition that weakens your immune system.

Risk factors
By Mayo Clinic Staff
Factors that increase your risk of basal cell carcinoma include:
Chronic sun exposure. A lot of time spent in the sun — or in commercial tanning booths — increases the risk of basal cell carcinoma. The threat is greater if you live in a sunny or high-altitude climate, both of which expose you to more UV radiation. The risk is also higher if most of your exposure occurred before the age of 18. Your risk is greater if you have had at least one blistering sunburn.
Exposure to radiation. Psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) treatments for psoriasis may increase your risk of basal cell carcinoma and other forms of skin cancer. Having undergone radiation treatments for childhood acne or other conditions also may increase your risk of basal cell carcinoma.
Fair skin. If you have very light skin or you freckle or sunburn easily, you're more likely to develop skin cancer than is someone with a darker complexion. Basal cell carcinoma is rare in black people.
Your sex. Men are more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma than women are.
Your age. Because basal cell carcinomas often take decades to develop, the majority of basal cell carcinomas occur in people age 50 or older.
A personal or family history of skin cancer. If you've had basal cell carcinoma one or more times, you have a good chance of developing it again. If you have a family history of skin cancer, you may have an increased risk of developing basal cell carcinoma.
Immune-suppressing drugs. Taking medications that suppress your immune system, especially after transplant surgery, significantly increases your risk of skin cancer. Cancers in people with a weakened immune system generally are more aggressive than they are in otherwise healthy people.
Exposure to arsenic. Arsenic, a toxic metal that's found widely in the environment, increases the risk of basal cell carcinoma and other cancers. Everyone has some arsenic exposure because it occurs naturally in the soil, air and groundwater. But people who may be exposed to higher levels of arsenic include farmers, refinery workers, and people who drink contaminated well water or live near smelting plants.
Inherited syndromes that cause skin cancer. Certain rare genetic diseases increase the risk of basal cell carcinoma. Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (Gorlin-Goltz syndrome) causes numerous basal cell carcinomas, as well as pitting on the hands and feet and spine abnormalities. Xeroderma pigmentosum causes an extreme sensitivity to sunlight and a high risk of skin cancer because people with this condition have little or no ability to repair damage to the skin from ultraviolet light.

If you find that you have to spend any length of time outdoors I have a little tips for you that I learned waaaay back when I used to work in the film industry (yes, I was in quite a few film productions). The crew would soak cloths in ice water and SEA BREEZE Classic Astringent - the same stuff you probably used on your face.   They would take those cloths and wrap around their necks when they worked outdoors in the hot, hot, hot Southern days.   The eucalyptus and alcohol really works to help cool.  BTW, SEA BREEZE Classic Astringent, when mixed with a little baby oil is really good to use after any waxing or sugar hair removal.  Just rub it on for a quick soothe,

Now for some summertime spa awesomeness . . . our July Spa Specials:

We'll start within THE NAIL SANCTUARY - Get beach-ready, sandal-worthy feet with your choice of a Margarita Service or Coconut-Lime Mojito . The summer cocktail bar is open!! Celebrate warm weather and treat yourself to a little tropical escape with our refreshingly cheerful Summer Cocktail Collection. This multi-tasking treatment is the perfect relaxation-inducing pedicure and manicure with the scent of refreshingly perfect summertime. Pedicure alone is $60 - Manicure and Pedicure is $90

The Bare-all-Brazilian is staying at $45 with Bikini Hair Removal remaining at $35.  In addition to that, we are introducing two hair removal packages.  1)  3-mos of  Brazilians - that would be July, August & September for just $129 and 2)  Bikini or Brazilian, Leg AND Underarm hair removal package for $99.

Derek and Army are excited to provide some soothing coconut-lime massage services. July has our hour Signature Swedish Massage just $60, while a relaxing 90 minute treat is $85. The most common type of massage is Swedish massage therapy. It involves soft, long kneading strokes, as well as light, rhythmic tapping stroke on topmost layers of muscles. This is also combined with movement of the joints. By relieving muscle tension, Swedish therapy can be both relaxing and energizing.  Swedish Massage will help after an injury.  Of course, Spa 131 offers several modalities for your individual needs.  If you aren't sure that would be best for you, never hesitate to pick up the phone and speak with either of our team specialist.

What can be more appropriate for July than the All American Cherry Pie?

This summer favorite is now available in the treatment room! Our Sweet Cherry Pie Facial features a cherry fruit enzyme that contains the potent lightening ingredients lactic acid, kojic and arbutin as well as the gentle exfoliant mandelic acid. Antioxidants are infused into the skin diminishing the surface signs of aging. The skin is then treated with a vanilla bean mask to hydrate, firm and improve skin tone. Suitable for all skin types, this facial will leave the skin both nourished and luminous - specially priced in July for just $75.

Neither of those summer deliciousness appealing?  No worries!   What about a July BOGO?  All regular priced hour (or longer) facials and massages are 2-4-1 during the 1st week of July.  You don't have to come during the first week of July, you only have to schedule your July and August service while it's on sale - available for ONE WEEK only to use for your July service and then your August service, as well.  I think that's an offer you can't afford to pass up . . . right?

As these July special treats are . . . well . . . "special" . . . they are only available while supplies last! But . . . hold on . . .THIS is our BIG news . . . Spa 131 is giving away in a drawing EVERY Saturday in July AND August a weekend get-away to Hilton Head, Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale or even a mountain respite. You get to choose where you get to put the lime in the coconut.

We have purchased some pretty cool travel vouchers where you get to choose your destination. Each Saturday afternoon during the entire Months of July and August we will choose a winner from every client that comes in during that particular week who receives any hour or longer service. Oh . . . buying a service for a gift certificate qualifies, too. You pick your location, you choose when you'll go. It's yours to do whatever you want! How about them limes?

That's all for now, my friends. We sure are looking forward to helping you through these next few brutal weather weeks. Sounds like a perfect opportunity to get into Spa 131!

Cheers to you! Be safe with any fireworks!

The Grass is Always Greener . . .

Isn't social media great? We get to look deeply at everyone else's life - personal and private - and see all of their successes, their joys. We see their BIG acquisitions, additions. Their life, their family, their mere existence is outstanding. We might look around at our own "stuff" and think it is inadequate, showing lack of success. Maybe the pages in our appointment book looks slim. Our children are not going to Med School or even graduating top in their class. We! Are! Failures!

Hold it! Stop right there! I had a little "Unplugging" Experience only yesterday and I want to share it with you. First thing was that I didn't go cold turkey, BUT I didn't look at FB, tweet, instagram - didn't scroll any feed - the world didn't end when I failed to read about everyone's awesome weekend activities. I'm sure many people did some most excellent beaching, hiking, eating, partying but I didn't see it, didn't miss seeing it, glad you did it, but I "unplugged." I have some suggestions to help you get over "The Grass is Greener" Syndrome.

1) Allow yourself some "No Social Media!" time. Do something else, or do nothing at all. Buddy and I walked the Riverfront yesterday. After that, I watched (binge watched, actually) some mindless television that I have been wanting to see. My house was dirty and it stayed that way. I vegged and it felt so good. Give yourself permission to completely unwind on occasion. Make no apologies. Your next day outlook will be changed for the better.

2) Remind yourself that we truly are all the same. We ALL have successes just like we ALL have failures. You better believe that every life has challenges. The washing machine breaks, the appointments slow down, the landlord isn't great . . . and that is just for me, today, right now. There will be more challenges - no doubt. No one is immune.

3) Be careful who you invite into your life. There are as many different personalities as there are people. We all know the "Negative Nellies," the embellishers, The one-uppers, the athletic kings and queens, the projecting parents - oh, this list would go on forever. I tend to fall into the Pollyanna category, myself. My point is this - If you invite the braggadocious in, you may feel inadequate. IF you invite the joy stealers in, you will be brought down. What ever - WHOM ever flips your trigger - simply beware and take steps to limit their influence on your life. You do not have to hear about the greener grass on their side of the fence unless you want to.

4) Finally, give yourself permission to make an investment in your own personal well-being. That could mean a River walk, like I did yesterday. I would also suggest that a regular visit to Spa 131 can be exactly like a mini-vacation without ever leaving the area. If you scoff at this idea, I invite you to prove me wrong - no I DARE you to prove me wrong! Study after study shows just how accurate this is. And - - - here are our June specials to make a trip to Spa 131 a little more enticing:
